WS5 - Vision Mātauranga (VM)
Māori are descendants from the greatest scientists of Aotearoa, having inherited an intrinsic understanding of kaitiakitanga (caring for the land) from their tāhū (ancestral) roots. Embracing this, we believe Māori-led innovation will play a key role in reducing the impact of climate change in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Te Whatunga Hiko aims to build, grow and develop Māori expertise in the electricity industry. We want to address this at the origin to inspire and encourage more rangatahi to become a part of the sector, whether that be in education or industry. We can’t solve the problems of tomorrow with only the knowledge of today, so we pass on our mātauranga to future generations. We want to inspire our rangatahi to be entrepreneurs, inventing new technologies to address climate change. We focus this education and inspiration around STEMM, science, technology, engineering, maths and mātauranga.
Hanganga (Infrastructure)
The electricity network in Aotearoa New Zealand is fragile in northern rural areas. Often remote hapori reside in these locations where power outages can be a common occurrence. Te Whatunga Hiko investigates improving the stability of electricity for these remote areas.
